The Chimney Sweep, Signed Open Edition Print by E. Anthony Orme

" The chimney sweep in this painting is on his way to work and can be seen carrying his extendable brushes as well as a dust sheet and sack. Chimney sweeps were very busy in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This was because all the terraced houses would burn coal as the main source of heat. Coal of course created loots of soot in the chimney stacks. The chimney sweep would firstly fasten his dust sheet over the unlit fireplace in order to minimize the dustfall from the stack. He would extend the circular rough bristled brush up the chimney and work the soot loose. Of course this was extremely dirty work and the sweep would end up black with soot - a lot of this acrid dust ended up in his lungs. At the end of the sweep the man would brush the downfall of soot into his bag. Then off he’d go with a full sack. I was told at the time that the sweep would give the soot to allotment owners who would place it round their rhubarb plants. "
