The Old Roundabout, Bury Market, Manchester - Hand Signed Fine Art Print by E. Anthony Orme

This particular scene is really close to my heart as it has seen successive generations of children (including my own) enjoying a ride on the mini-cars, open topped buses and motorbikes. I remember my two young sons climbing onto this fantastic roundabout. The youngest on the open topped bus with its bell and rope and the oldest straddled on a motorbike complete with sound effects. They, along with several other children would wait with excitement for the ride to begin. A young man would walk around checking the restraining straps while taking the money from the adults. He would then start off the roundabout by physically pushing it slowly round. Then once set in motion he would walk to the centre and begin to turn a very large vertical wheel which worked a set of gears, so that once it had reached the chosen velocity he could walk around at leisure. I remember that he would point a finger at any unsuspecting child and say loudly “You’re a banana!” the children squealed with delight. We all loved you - you are missed!

Bury Collection - Having spent the last 50 years living in and around the Bury area, I have, like many other people, seen vast changes in the landscape of this lovely town. It has been my greatest pleasure over the years to study, paint and sketch the people, monuments and important buildings of Bury town.
