The Fish and Chip Shop, Signed Open Edition Print by E. Anthony Orme

" I have tried to create a typical scene from my childhood in which a small group of friends have gathered together to play their various games. As was normal in those days, they would meet after school and position themselves in the light of the gas lamps and corner shop, in this case a fish and chip shop. The girls are enjoying a stint on a makeshift swing, which is really just an old rope thrown over the arms of the gas lamp and secured to take the weight of a single child. Often an old car tyre would be used as a seat. The boys are deeply engrossed in a game of marbles or ‘allies’ as we used to call the game. They have drawn a chalked circle and the kneeling boy is intent on making sure that the rules are strictly observed, i.e. no ballbearings or ‘bullies’. Their various modes of travel are parked up against the fish and chip shop, the home-made ‘bogie’ will easily accommodate 2 children plus one pushing "
