" I have been painting ballerinas and ballet scenes for the last fifty years, and have been lucky and somewhat persistent enough  to talk my way into the backstage areas. My work has involved many ballerinas actually dancing on stage but I always come back to the real blood, sweat and tears which backstage depicts. ‘Ballet 1’ shows a ballerina bending down and tying her shoe ribbons. The ballerina’s name is Andrea and she has modelled for me many times over the years. She would hold a difficult pose for the longest time and after a break would re-strike the pose perfectly. . This piece is rendered in charcoal and chalk, a medium which allows me to work at a faster pace. "
