" I have been painting ballerinas and ballet scenes for the last fifty years, and have been lucky and somewhat persistent enough  to talk my way into the backstage areas. My work has involved many ballerinas actually dancing on stage but I always come back to the real blood, sweat and tears which backstage depicts. ‘Ballet 1’ shows a ballerina bending down and tying her shoe ribbons. The ballerina’s name is Andrea and she has modelled for me many times over the years. She would hold a difficult pose for the longest time and after a break would re-strike the pose perfectly. . This piece is rendered in charcoal and chalk, a medium which allows me to work at a faster pace. "

“ The Girl On The Balcony “ is a slight deviation from my usual scenic views of Venice. She is looking wistfully towards The Grand Canal with its passing gondola and distant buildings. The single glass of wine seems to suggest that she is enjoying some quiet ‘me time’.

Peter The Lamplighter, Hand Signed Fine Art Print by E Anthony Orme

" For this trick, all you would need was a long stick and some cheek. The house which I lived in was a corner terrace, which bordered a back alley. Across the alley were the backs of another row of terraced houses. At the end of the alley was a street Gaslamp. Now I need to point out that in those days, all the street Gaslamp’s were turned on, one at a time by a designated lamplighter. Our lamplighter was a man called Peter and he really was a great character, but great or not we had a wicked trick to play…and it had to be done. Peter had a bike and a long pole and travelled around from street to street, wearing his ex-RAF great coat and flat cap. He would park his bike against our lamppost and ignite it, using the long pole. He would then move on down the street, which was a cul-de-sac. Enter, we sneaky little urchins. We would climb on to the backyard wall, reach over to the lamppost and with a modified stick, turn off the tap.  On returning, Peter would spot the unlit lamp and scratching his head, would re-ignite it. We didn’t do this a lot, but I believe that Peter must have thought that the lamppost must have been faulty. Loved that guy! "

" The boys are in the act of attaching the rope around the top of a Gaslamp, sometimes they would tie the rope to an old bicycle tyre, to give it extra swing and extra comfort.
The long upright paintings of  " Boys' Games " and " Girls' Games "  are designed to be a pair. They show how we used to use these streetlamps, as totally necessary, recreational vehicles. "
